Philanthropy & Service

Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) is a voluntary organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse through citizen action. They build awareness, promote and implement prevention efforts and work to ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve his or her fullest potential. PCAA introduced the pinwheel as the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention. The pinwheel represents PCAA’s efforts to change the way our nation thinks about prevention, focusing on community activities and public policies. It reminds us of childlike notions and visually represents the chance at the healthy, happy and full lives all children deserve. Over one million pinwheels have been displayed since the inception of PCAA’s new pinwheel campaign.

Pinwheels for Prevention
The core fundraising initiative for PCAA revolves around the pinwheels for Prevention campaign promoted in April (Child Abuse Prevention Month). SDT chapters nationwide participate in pinwheel projects on their campuses by selling and displaying pinwheels, and some chapters participate in one of PCAA’s Big Pinwheel Gardens in New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C. In addition, many chapters host events and activities throughout the year, from dance marathons to bake sales. We’re working hard to DEFΣΔT CHILD ABUSE! Together, chapters raised more than $300,000 in 2014-15.
